Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. At 21%, a price of 121 divided by 1.21 gives a net of 100 and 21 of tax. Subtracting 21% would be wrong.
Which rate should I use?
The one that applies to your sale. Choosing a country fills in that country's rates for tax year 2026, with the date they were last checked and a link to the official source. Which of them applies to a given product or service is still your call, and your tax authority's.
Does it work for US sales tax?
It does the arithmetic, and the country list carries the state base rate for the larger states. The United States has no VAT, though: counties and cities add their own sales tax on top, so the rate at a given address is usually higher than the state rate.
Does it work for sales tax and GST?
Yes. The arithmetic is the same for any single-rate tax added to a price; only the name and the rate differ.
Is this tax advice?
No. It is a calculator, not advice. Which rate applies, and what you have to declare, is between you and your tax authority.
