The Mortgage stress test calculator

What a lender checks before it says yes: that the payment still works if rates rise by a few points. The gap between the rate you would pay and the rate you are tested at is where most applications are lost.

Frequently asked questions

What rate will I be tested at?

Usually your rate plus one to three points, and lenders differ. A short fixed rate is generally tested harder than a long one, because the borrower is exposed sooner. Change the stress figure to match the lender you are talking to, and watch what it does to the amount: a three point test on a four and a half percent rate can take a fifth off what you are offered.

How exact is it?

The arithmetic is exact and rounded the way money is, at the cent. What it cannot know is anything specific to you, so read it as the ordinary case rather than as advice.

Is anything uploaded?
